Fatality reported as snowmobiles go through the ice in Delta County

DELTA COUNTY, Mich. – An incident in which several snowmobiles went through the ice on Little Bay de Noc on Sunday evening has resulted in a fatality.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office reported its response to two separate ice rescue calls over the weekend on Little Bay de Noc.

The first occurred on Saturday at 6:25 a.m. It is stated that dispatch received a call that a four-wheeler had gone through the ice resulting in two people submersed in the water. In this instance both individuals were able to get themselves out of the water and back to shore. The sheriff’s office further stated that they denied any medical treatment.

The second, more tragic accident took place Sunday evening at 8:43 p.m. Dispatch received a call identifying that multiple people that had gone through the ice on snowmobiles and were in the water. Responders were able to locate the people approximately one mile off of the Days River.

The group were six people in total, and of the six, four of those had gone through the ice and were in the water. Those individuals who had not gone through were able to pull several of the others out of the water. First responders were able to extricate the others, one of which was unresponsive at the scene. Life-saving measures were administered in the moment and the person was transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim was 44-year-old James Massey Jr. from South Carolina. The other three people were treated and released from OSF St Francis Hospital.

This rescue was a collaborative effort between the following entities: Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Search and Rescue, Delta County Dive Team, Delta County Central Dispatch, Gladstone Public Safety, Ensign Township Fire Department, Masonville Township Fire Department, Rampart EMS, and the Michigan State Police.
