Elgin “David” Mahn

Long time Newberry resident, Elgin “David” Mahn died February 25, 2024, at Golden Leaves Living Center following a courageous battle with vascular dementia. 

David was born on September 30, 1937, in Newberry, Michigan, son of Elgin H. Mahn and Laina (Honkonen) Mahn.  While he was in high school, he played on the baseball, basketball and football teams.  David graduated from Newberry High School in 1955. 

Following his graduation, he attended Northern Michigan University.  While at NMU, David was active in Luther League.  It was at Luther League where he met his future wife, Marcia (Jacobson).  David graduated from NMU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. 

David married the love of his life on August 1, 1959.  He began teaching in Engadine and also completed his Master’s Degree in Business Education.  He spent over 30 years teaching at Tahquamenon Area Schools where he coached and was the yearbook advisor.  

His hobbies included going to high school football and basketball games, often working the scoreboard with his good friend, Ernie Kaven.  David was an avid Detroit Lion, Tiger, Piston and Red Wing fan.  His summers were spent gardening, picking berries and putting up firewood for winter.  He was also involved on the church council, finance committee and choir at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  David was a member of the Board of Directors at the Tahquamenon Area Credit Union.  

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his Uncles Charles and Bill Honkonen; Aunts Ida Honkonen, Elma Haapala, Kathrine Baine, Sally Hockstad, Lucille Lapasky and cousin Charles (Doris) Haapala.  

Survivors include his wife Marcia (Jacobson) Mahn of Newberry; Debra (Joe) Hilliard of McMillan; Lisa (Dave) Dake of Newberry; grandchildren Zachary (Nicole) Hilliard of Newberry; Erica Hilliard (Sanjay Shenoy) of Milford, MI and great grandchildren Madelynn and Odin Hilliard of Newberry; brother-in-law James Jacobson of Lady Lake, Florida. 

A gathering of family and friends will take place Saturday March 2, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry. A memorial service celebrating the life of David will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Pastor Melinda VanderSys officiating.
