UPDATE St. Marys River closed following marine casualty

A laker struck a mud lake navigational aid and ran aground reports say.

No injuries, no fatalities, and no visible leaks, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Northern Great Lakes sector. Two tugs are also on the scene, one of which is an Anglian lady and the other is a W.I. Scott Purvis. There is a coast guard sip near the boat in distress that appears to be helping to free the boat and keep an eye on the situation.

Previous Report The Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service has closed the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, officials said Thursday morning.

The river is closed from Nine Mile Point to Point Aux Frenes following a marine casualty involving a commercial vessel near Munuscong Lake Junction.

There are no specifics about what happened, and no word yet on when the St. Marys River will be reopened.
