One Charged with Arson After Lighting Someone on Fire Downtown

On August 4, 2023, officers with the Drug Enforcement Unit, with assistance from the Crime Suppression Unit, charged 28-year-old Jesse McKeachnie with several offences including arson.

On July 29, 2023, 911 Communicators received a report of someone having been lit on fire on Queen Street East at Bruce Street. Officers were dispatched to the location but were unable to locate the suspect or victim. Further investigation revealed the suspect, who officers identified as the accused, had doused the victim with gasoline and ignited it with a flame.

On August 2, 2023, officers located the victim. The victim denied sustaining any injuries as they had quickly removed the clothing that was set on fire.

On August 4, 2023, officers located the accused on Queen Street East at Gore Street. They were arrested.

The accused is charged with:

  • Arson – Cause Bodily Harm
  • Assault Causing Bodily Harm
  • Possess Incendiary Material

The accused was held in custody pending an appearance in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court.
