Local 2251 President vows to “Get Group Health Centre Back”

Members of  USW Local  2251 , the largest union at Algoma Steel  have voted  to launch legal proceedings to fight the de-rostering of its members by Group Health Centre.

Union members voted during two separate meetings to authorize the legal expenses involved in the filing of an injunction and lawsuit.

Local 2251 currently represents just over 2,1000 workers at Algoma Steel.

2251 President, Mike DaPrat said , they are  trying to get the injunction in by May 31 to stop the de-rostering and then  proceed to get the Group Health Centre back.

The union and its members played a pivotal role in the early 1960’s to help create the institution, believed to be the first of its kind as a model for delivery of health services.

The Group Health Centre announced earlier this year that over 10,000 patients would be without a doctor as of May 15th.
