International Field of Curling Teams Coming to the Sault

Olympic and World champion curling teams including representatives from the United States, Canada, Korea, Japan, Italy and Sweden will be in Sault Ste. Marie next month competing for $90 thousand dollars in prize money in the Soo Curlers Fall Classic.  This is one of the largest purses in curling and is the first ever World Curling Tour event in northern Ontario.  The competition runs from October 26-29 at the YNCU curling centre in the Sault.

“Many of the top teams in the world have already committed to the event as well as six teams from northern Ontario,” said event chair Al Harnden.

Among the teams competing in the Soo Curlers Fall Classic will be:

  • Team Shuster-USA, Olympic Champions
  • Team Dunstone-Canada, featuring Olympic Champion Ryan Harnden
  • Team Retornaz-Italy, World and Olympic medalists
  • Team Carruthers-Canada, featuring Olympic Champion Brad Jacobs
  • Team Howard-Canada, multiple Canadian and World Champion

Three other teams from the United States have also confirmed their attendance along with teams from Japan, Korea, Sweden, and Italy and a group of teams from northern Ontario.

Harnden said that tickets for the event, including $100 full event passes, go on sale today and can be purchased at:  www.soocurlers.com/soocurlers-fall-classic .  “We are going to give curling fans a unique “up close” experience with our Fan Zone which includes on-ice seating and a licensed bar.”   Daily tickets will also be available at the curling club for each draw.

The presenting sponsor for the October Fall Classic is Kioti Tractor, a major supporter of curling in Canada.

The four-day World Curling event will feature a triple-knockout competition with eight teams qualifying for the championship round.

The competition will be live streamed on six sheets of ice at the YNCU curling centre through YouTube on the Curling Zone via CurlingStadium and will be broadcast on big screens in the curling club.
