A company in Elliot Lake that owns two apartment building has been fined for a Environmental Protections Act violation.

The offence dates back to May 2019 . 1432441 Ontario Inc. owns and operates two apartment buildings located on Spruce Street in the City of Elliot Lake. During an inspection of the Spruce Street apartment buildings on October 25, 2017, it was observed that there were no recycling facilities set up for the tenants and that all waste was being disposed of in the same bins. On October 31, 2017, the ministry began to seek voluntary compliance by 1432441 Ontario Inc.

On November 13, 2018, due to the lack of compliance by the comp[any, a ministry Order was issued for each address requiring the company to establish a recycling program at the Spruce Street apartment buildings by December 14, 2018. The Orders also required the company to provide the ministry with written updates by December 18, 2018.

At the company’s request, the Orders were later amended and re-issued with new compliance dates of May 3, 2019, to establish a recycling program and to provide written updates to the ministry by May 6, 2019. On May 7, 2019, after not receiving an update from the company as required, ministry staff attended the apartment buildings and observed once again that no recycling program was established for the separation of waste and recyclables.

On April 25, 2022, an individual from the municipality attended the apartment buildings and noted there were still no recycling bins. The ministry’s Environmental Investigations and Enforcement Branch investigated and laid charges which resulted in the conviction.

As a result the company was fined $3,500 plus a victim fine surcharge of $875, and given 12 months to pay.

  1. There are a few slumlords around here that have gone far beyond that, like the owner (or mortgage holder) of the Canadian, or the one with the initials P.K. How long can they get way with not paying tens of thousands in fines before the places are seized and /or the slumlords thrown in jail??

    1. Well it was almost 6 years from when the offers occurred until fines were issued. They are then given a year to pay the fine. Based on these timely actions, I’m guessing they get serious about things around half past hell freezing over.
