A weekend of fun has been planned for Saturday, July 8th and Sunday, July 9th so mark your calendars!
The first annual Coppa Giovanni is being hosted at Strathclair Park and has partnered with Giovanni’s Italian Festival to offer something for all ages.
The soccer tournament, in honour of Tony Celli, local soccer icon, will feature teams from Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie and will be divided into two divisions each playing for prize money. The first place teams will be awarded $3000 and the second place teams will receive $500.
Running concurrently on July 8th there will be an inflatable park (to the delight of children!!) providing bouncy fun for the kids from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and a beer garden hosted by Northern Breweries (to the delight of adults) slaking thirsts until 5 p.m. A small fee will be charged to attend the inflatable park which will also include face painting, and a soccer bubble ball, with proceeds going to support the Soup Kitchen.
The tournament will continue on July 9th and will be offered alongside The Italian Festival, hosted by Giovanni’s Restaurant. This event will be happening at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion and will run from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m., offer delicious foods as well as music with some performers coming in from Italy.
The Coppa Giovanni has partnered local companies including Belterra, TWIN Contracting, GFL, Superior Environmental Services, Giovanni’s, Fratelli’s, Burger Don, Kaptive Studios and the City of Sault Ste. Marie to fund this event.
Tom Katagis, convener for this inaugural event, dropped by the First Local Studios to share his enthusiasm. His excitement and commitment is evident as he shares the vision for the tournament. He invites the community out to support and have some fun!
