Two young people were held in custody for Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) related to an armed robbery in Sault Ste Marie.
On June 24, 2024, shortly after 2:00 a.m., the Sault Ste Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Batchewana First Nation Police Service and the East Algoma OPP responded to a stolen vehicle which was stolen at gunpoint by two people in the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
SSMPS advised the OPP that the vehicle’s Global Positioning System (GPS) showed it had left the Thessalon area and continued eastbound on Highway 17. Shortly before 4:00 a.m., the OPP observed the vehicle at a gas station in the community of Mississauga First Nation. Once the vehicle stopped officers conducted a high-risk takedown and safely arrested two people. Police also recovered two BB guns in the vehicle.
As a result, the 17-year-old driver from North York was issued two provincial offence notices and charged with:
- Glass G1 licence holder-unaccompanied by qualified driver
- Unnecessary slow driving
The driver and passenger, both from North York were held in custody and later transported to SSMPS to answer to their charges.
Assisting with the investigation were the OPP’s Emergency Response Team, the OPP’s Canine Unit and the Anishinabek Police Service-Sagamok First Nation detachment.

Garnet Gerald, 19, of Thunder Bay and a 17-year-old from North York are charged with:
Robbery using a firearm
Using a firearm in the commission of an offence
Careless use of a firearm
Pointing a firearm
In addition, the 17-year-old driver was charged with:
Class G1 licence holder-unaccompanied by a qualified driver
Unnecessary slow driving
