The scholarship, now in its second year, recognized medical student recipients Kyle Burton, Katrina Elzinga, David Klemet, Lindsay Sandell and Mackenzie Suarez.

Criteria upon which the scholarships are awarded include the medical student’s desire to practice in the Upper Peninsula after residency training, students in their second, third or fourth year of medical school as well as students who will be training at the UP Region Campus for their final two years of medical school. Primary preference is given to medical students from Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties while secondary preference goes to medical students from the UP. Finally, tertiary preference is allocated to medical students who have intentions on practicing in the area, but are not from the UP.

“Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine is fortunate to have this medical education partnership with Copper Shores Community Health Foundation,” said Community Assistant Dean of the UP Campus, Dr. Stuart Johnson. “These scholarships are given to students training in our rural communities, increasing their likelihood of practicing medicine in the Upper Peninsula once training is complete.”

The Copper Shores Community Health Foundation Tuition Assistance Scholarship is an investment in the future by providing support to medical students who want to return and practice locally. Through supporting medical students as they train in their clinical curriculum rotations across the UP it is helping to bridge a connection to our future generation of skilled health care professionals.

“We’re happy to support the educational pursuits of these young medical professionals and hope that our investment in them will someday reward this community by their service and investment in it,” – Kevin Store, President and CEO of Copper Shores Community Health Foundation
