Michael Amadio brought the Stanley Cup home to the Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday and hundreds of local hockey fans lined up and around GFL Memorial Gardens for an opportunity to be photographed with the Sault native, and Lord Stanley’s world famous mug.

Amadio, a right-winger with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, scored five goals and added five assists to help lead the Knight’s to the first Stanley Cup in the franchise’s six-year history.

It’s become a popular tradition that Cup-winning clubs including players, coaches and other staff, take their turn bringing the Cup to their hometowns.

“The kids were soooo excited,” says Tasha Chartrand, who was seeing the Cup for a third time. “We waited three hours in line. This is awesome.”

Ten-year-old Davis Cumming, centre, and his mom, Nicole were among scores of Sault area hockey fans who turned out at GFL Memorial Gardens Wednesday to meet Las Vegas Golden Knights’ winger Michael Amadio and pose for a picture with him and the Stanley Cup.

Amadio, a Sault native, also signed autographs for fans, many of who lined up for more than four hours.

The Golden Knights, with a strong contribution from the 27-year-old Amadio, won their first Stanley Cup in just their sixth season in the National Hockey League.

John Harris, right, is all smiles as he poses for a photo with Las Vegas Golden Knights’ winger Michael Amadio at GFL Memorial Gardens.

The Golden Knights and Amadio, a Sault native, won the Stanley Cup in June, beating the Florida Panthers in five games. The right-winger posed for pics with the Cup and signed autographs for two hours at the Gardens Wednesday afternoon.

This occasion marked the third time Harris has had a close encounter with the Cup and he says seeing hockey’s most sought-after trophy never gets old.

“The first time I saw the Cup was when Tyler Kennedy brought it to Trout Lake,” said Harris. “I’m a Leafs’ fan, I have to see it every chance I get!”
