Students Combine Energy, Teamwork & Confidence in Upcoming Young Americans Performances

The Algoma District School Board (ADSB) once again welcomes to Sault Ste Marie the Young Americans – an educational performing arts group which provides arts experiential learning opportunities and workshops for students. Twenty Young American facilitators will spend three days in March working with 150 ADSB students providing instruction in singing, dancing and performance leading up to two exciting community performances on March 6 th.

These special performances will also be fundraising events to support food insecurities in our communities. ADSB first welcomed the Young Americans in February 2020 for a similar workshop and
performance opportunity. Superior Heights educator Alicia Annett played a key role in bringing the Young Americans to Sault Ste Marie at that time. She and ADSB Superintendent Marcy Bell were so pleased with the outcome that they were excited to have them return again this year.

The message the Young Americans share – “push your limits, step outside your comfort zone, and try new things” – resonated with ADSB staff and students alike at that time.

The opportunity to take part in this year’s workshops has been made available to ADSB students in the Sault Ste Marie and surrounding area, in grades 5 through 12. Dance and music experience is an asset but not necessary, as the facilitators work with any student who shows a willingness to take part and who demonstrate an interest in performing arts. Some students, who are comfortable to do so, will be granted an opportunity to perform solos in the final production.

The cast of specially trained Young Americans performers/teachers provides a safe and exciting atmosphere for students to learn, create, and grow as they work on vocal and dance training and
full stage performance. Students will spend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday March 4 th , 5th and
6th at the Sault Community Theatre learning, rehearsing and preparing for show day, which is Wednesday, March 6 th

Two variety-show-style performances will be presented, one at 2:00pm and one at 6:00pm. The show is jam-packed with choral, musical theatre and rock n’ roll with the Young Americans cast performing the first act. During the second act, ADSB students are the stars, with support from The Young Americans, as they sing, dance, and perform the show and solos they’ve learned in their 16 hours of training and workshops.
