SooMarket Opens

The former MillMarket now has a new home and a new name. The Soo Market officially opened Saturday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The SooMarket features numerous vendors with fresh produce, home-style baking and artisans displays.

The former Checker Cab / Greyhound Bus depot underwent a $3.3 million transformation to become the SooMarket. Funded at three different levels , the project received about $1.7 million in Federal money along with $1.2 million from the city.

Fall and winter hours are Satudays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market is open Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from the last week of June to Labour Day.

The move to its new location and to be part of the Downtown Plaza has taken almost five years to make happen. Visitors on Saturday also got a glimpse of the Downtown Plaza. The $11 million plaza is near completion and should open at the end of October.

  1. Shipping containers, tacky looking lines that will wear off and look like hell, $13,000,000.00 really??
    Hopefully people aren’t too afraid to attend the crime ridden drug infested area to shop.
    Another colossal waste of a pile of money that could have went toward what was actually and desperately needed instead of this unwanted overpriced mass of concrete. Now they are going to need 24/7 security, to add insult to injury, how much taxpayer money is this going to cost?
