UPDATED – Firefighters Respond to Church Fire on MacDonald Ave.

Sault Fire Services provide the following update to this previously reported story:

“On Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service crews responded to a call of a fire in an assembly occupancy in the central area of the city.

At 10:00 a.m., crews responded to a fire in an assembly occupancy in the 100 block of MacDonald Avenue. Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire.

The fire is not considered suspicious. Further investigation revealed the cause of the fire resulted from a failure of an electrical heating appliance.

There is moderate damage to the building. There are no injuries to report.”

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services and Sault Police Service along with the PUC responded to an incident at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church on MacDonald Avenue and Gladstone Ave. around 10:30 am Tuesday.

PUC were called to turn off power. Sault Police Service had MacDonald Ave closed in both directions.

No further details are currently available. Police at the scene say the incident was under control. No reports of damage or injury.
