Robbery, Assault, and Arson Charges Laid

On August 25, 2023, officers with Patrol Services charged 23-year-old Joanne Agawa with robbery and several other offences.

Around 6:00 p.m., 911 Communicators received a report of a robbery at a business in the 200 block of Bay Street. Officers were dispatched to the business where the suspect, who police identified as the accused, had been taken into custody by security officers.

Investigation revealed the accused had attempted to leave a business with concealed items they had not paid for. When they were confronted by staff and security, the accused had threatened them with a hypodermic needle and lit a stolen item of clothing on fire. While being taken into custody by security, the accused had spit on and kicked them.

The accused was arrested and is charged with:

  • Robbery with Weapon
  • Assault with Weapon x2
  • Assault x2
  • Arson
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000

The accused was held in custody pending a Weekend and Statutory Holiday court hearing and they were remanded.
