Person Charged In Sand Hill Crane Death on Golf Course

A follow up to a story FirstLocalNews.com reported back in July. A person has been charged with cruelty to wildlife following an investigation stemming from an incident at Silver Creek Golf Course July 21.

According to witnesses , a golfer purposely drove over a young Sand Hill Crane with a golf cart.

The bird did not die immediately , the bird was rescued by a bystander however died shortly after from its injuries, FirstLocalNews has learned.

As reported last month, the young bird was seen on the golf course Friday, July 21 and appeared to have some injury. The same bird was once again seen on Sunday, July 23. An individual noticed the bird and ran over it with the golf cart that the party were using. Anishinbek Police Services confirmed to FirstLocalNews that “the individual has been charged and is in the courts as we speak” The name of the person has not been released.

If convicted, the person could be looking at a hefty fine. A person found guilty of cruelty to wildlife could face jail time of up to 5 years or a fine of up to $10,0000 according to the Criminal Code of Canada under cruelty to animals.
