Mayor for a Day contest winner

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to announce the winner of the Mayor for a Day contest.

Elise Hopper, Grade 5, École publique Écho-des-Rapides, has been selected as our community’s Mayor for a Day. Elise submitted a letter that demonstrated an understanding of municipal operations and expressed a desire to help others.

Mayor Shoemaker and the City wish to extend congratulations to Elise and all of the students who participated in the contest. Through written or video submissions, local youth demonstrated an understanding of municipal governance and operations, along with a passion for Sault Ste. Marie.

Honourable mentions include:

  • Roree Poirier, Grade 5, Northern Heights Public School
  • Madeline Tonon, Grade 5, St. Paul Catholic School
  • Madelyn McLean, Grade 6, Northern Heights Public School
  • Minaz Umrigar, Grade 6, Holy Cross Catholic School
  • Maxwell Muncaster, Grade 5, Queen Elizabeth Public School

“We received hundreds of submissions from local students, and I really enjoyed reviewing them. I want to recognize all of the students who took the time to participate. It was really challenging to select just one student as our Mayor for a Day,” said Mayor Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.

“The Mayor for a Day contest is a great way for the City to engage with our local youth, and I’m looking forward to meeting our winner and the honourable mentions at the City Council meeting later this month.”

As the Mayor for a Day, Elise will get to tour the Civic Centre and meet with Mayor Shoemaker. Her class at École publique Écho-des-Rapides will receive a pizza party and a visit from the Mayor.

Elise will officially open the City Council meeting on June 24. Her letter will be read at the beginning of the meeting and students recognized with honourable mentions have been invited to attend the meeting as well.
