Fire Code Violations Leads To Hefty Fine For Apartment Owner

On Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, the owner of a multi-unit residential occupancy in the municipality of Sault Ste. Marie was fined $47,000 for multiple offences of the Ontario Fire Code, including:

  • Failing to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition
  • Failing to have portable extinguishers maintained and tested
  • Failing to test smoke alarms annually
  • Failing to post fire emergency procedures

“We take Ontario Fire Code violations very seriously as they can pose significant risks to the safety of tenants,” stated Deputy Chief Naomi Thibault. “Such penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate negligence when it comes to complying with the Ontario Fire Code.”

SSMFS would like to remind all property and business owners that having fire protection equipment inspected and tested is their responsibility, and failing to do so can result in substantial fines.
