Gateway Casino marked its 25th Anniversary today, alongside the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG).
OLG’s chair of the Board of Directors, Jim Warren, and other OLG team members presented a cheque totaling $35,286,618 to the City of Sault Ste. Marie. This represents the total contributions to date that the City has received for hosting the Casino in the region since it opened in May 1999. During the 2023–24 fiscal year, the City received $1,411,083 in gaming revenue from slots and table games. This revenue has been reinvested in the community supporting asset management projects for municipal facilities and alleviating the tax levy burden.
“The revenue generated through our host gaming site agreement plays a vital role in funding public services and community facilities. We appreciate the OLG’s ongoing support and their employees’ continued involvement in our community,” said Mayor Mathew Shoemaker.
“OLG is very proud to be part of Sault Ste. Marie’s success story for more than three decades – even pre-dating the arrival of the casino – helping create great local jobs, partnering with local organizations and businesses, and sponsoring community projects and events,” said Jim Warren, OLG’s Chair of the Board of Directors. “Sharing a portion of gaming revenue with the City since 1999 has had far-reaching impacts.
The City has invested this money in police and fire operations, the Sault-area hospital, and many other important initiatives that have made this community a great place to live. We like to say that a play with OLG is a “Play for Ontario” – that’s because one hundred percent of our profits are reinvested in the province for the people of Ontario. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the hardworking team at Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie, whose invaluable contribution makes life in Sault Ste. Marie more fulfilling and rewarding.”
