Celebrating with much gratitude is the Sault Ste Marie Down Syndrome Society Group.

The SSM Down Syndrome Society group was the lucky recipient of the 100 Women Who Care Event held at the Water Tower Inn. They were recently presented with a cheque for $12,200. Such a nice surprise during Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

The SSM DSS was started by a group of parents in the 1990s and continues to be run the same way to this day. They receive no government funding and rely on donations through small fundraisers like Domino’s Pizza Dough Raising Events, Nevada Ticket sales at the Circle K at the corner of Third Line, and memorial contributions at local funeral homes.

President Sheena Smith said in her presentation to the crowd of over 100 “We have done quite a few calendars over the years as you will see our children have enjoyed growing up in the Soo. Thank you for letting our kids find their place in our community together through including them in places from schools to sports activities- hockey and bowling, dance classes, art classes and skiing”. The opportunity for them to participate as valued members of our community is appreciated. We are thankful for your support!

“Our mission is to promote the growth and development of individuals with Down syndrome so that their lives may be enriched and that they may reach their full potential as members of society in Sault Ste. Marie”.

To raise awareness of their organization, they publish a calendar annually whenever they can afford to. The Group surprised the crowd by revealing their newest calendar for 2024 and the families, their friends, and children handed them out. If anyone would like to receive a copy, they can request it at [email protected].

The slogan for the 100 Women Who Care group is “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”- Helen Keller

They sure have shown that to be true…. since May 2016 100 Women Who Care SSM  have raised and donated over $308, 000. That’s outstanding!!
