Canada’s 157th birthday: Fun, food and fireworks

Sault and area residents will celebrate the country’s 157th birthday in all sorts of ways.

Some will hold house parties, backyard BBQ’s or gather with friends and family at the cottage.

A good many folks will mark the occasion by making their way down to the Sault waterfront and the Roberta Bondar Pavilion to ‘get their Canuck on.’

Some local residents shared their thoughts with First Local on why they’re proud to be Canadian and what they have planned for Monday.

Many Saultites will mark the occasion by making their way down to the Sault waterfront and the Roberta Bondar Pavilion to ‘get their Canuck on.’

Canada Day opening ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. Ryan Mauro will lead the gathering in the signing of the National Anthem.

The day’s entertainment features a return to the stage of Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame artists Donna and Leroy Anderson. The couple married in 1972 and joined forces to form a popular duo in 1974, and haven’t looked back.

Donna and Leroy perform at 4:30.

Other entertainers include BenTastic Fantastic Magic, the Northern Arts Academy Choir, the Northern Jazz Ensemble and The Way Backs.

There will be balloon animals, face painting/glitter tattoos, carnival games and colouring tables for the kids.

Hunger pangs can be taken care of at the Pavilion concession, with tasty BeaverTails, Cornucopia Popcorn, 40 Below Snacks Freeze Dried Candy and Li’l Orbits Mini Donuts.

Monday is also Day 4 (of 4) of the Sault Ste. Marie Poutine Feast at the Downtown Plaza.

Canada Day fireworks begin at dusk. For a cool perspective and vantage point for this year’s fireworks, the Miss Marie will be cruising the St. Mary’s during the display.
