Boat runs aground in St. Mary’s River

No one was hurt following a passenger ship that ran aground Saturday close to Sault Ste. Marie.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lake got a report at around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday that the 65-foot passenger tour boat Bide-A-Wee had hit ground in Canadian waters on the north bank of the St. Mary’s River. The boat said it didn’t suffer any injuries and remained intact.

For safety reasons, it was decided to move all the passengers off the boat. A USCG Station Sault Ste. Marie boat came to the rescue and brought everyone to the tour boat Hiawatha.

The Bide-A-Wee got help from a tugboat and managed to get back on its own.

The reason for the grounding and any additional damage to the boat will be looked into after the situation is under control.
