Bell to delete viewer’s saved TV shows and movies

Bell Fibe customers are being advised that recordings of their favourite shows and movies will disappear much more quickly beginning next month. The telecom giant has announced that, on May 1, customers will begin to see their recordings disappear after 60 days, as opposed to the previous 365 days.

Bell says customers will be notified 15 days in advance of a recording’s expiration date. Bell says it expects “minimal impact” to customers, as “nearly all” recordings are viewed within 60 days, according to a representative.

Rogers Ignite, a cloud-based video recorder offered by the telecom giant, automatically deletes recordings after one year, according to a Rogers spokesperson. They say they have no plans to change the expiration period, which is designed to help with storage capacity. Bell and other television providers have been pushing customers to move away from traditional PVRs, which stored recordings on hardware, in recent years.

On the plus side, viewers were able to watch the saved content on their TVs, computers, phones, and other devices. On the downside, however, the providers were required to store the HD content on out-of-band servers, which came with a price tag.
