A&W Foods of Canada Inc., a fast food chain based in Vancouver, is introducing a new program to reduce waste by replacing single use cups with exchangeable, reusable cups. Customers will be able to purchase one of the new exchangeable cups for $3 when they return to A&W for a drink.
When the cup is returned to A&W, it will be exchanged for a cleaned, sanitized cup and the customer will receive a 20 cent discount. The exchangeable cups can be used at any of A&W’s glass mugs locations.
According to the company, the goal of the program is to combat waste by replacing the more than 1 billion single use cups that are sent to landfills each year in Canada. A&W claims that a pilot program has already prevented over 55,000 single use cups from going to landfills, and that number is expected to grow into the millions in its first year of operation.
