Algoma Steel Cancels Annual Family Day Due To Worker Fatality

Algoma Steel invites everyone who’s interested to a community open house and you won’t need hard hats to attend.

The open house which is designed to inform the community on projects at the steel plant will be held at the Marconi Cultural Event Center ,450 Albert St W, Sault Ste. Marie from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, September 21.

In a release issued today, Algoma Steel said among many impactful projects to the community, Algoma Steel has committed to transitioning its manufacturing process from the integrated basic oxygen steelmaking route to electric arc steelmaking. This process change will shrink Algoma’s environmental footprint dramatically, with an expected reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70%, positioning Algoma as one of the leading producers of green steel in North America.

Members of Algoma Steel’s team will be on hand to share information and discuss Algoma Steel’s transformation and modernization initiatives including:

  • Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Construction Update
  • Algoma’s Sustainability Report
  • Plate Mill Modernization
  • Site Greening
  • Community Air Monitoring
  • Community Engagement
