Road Closure in Newberry starts today

Road closure

Charcoal Grade Road, in Luce County north of Newberry, will be closed at various points beginning July 17 for improvements to bridges and culverts, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

“This is a forest road that serves as access to state forest land, corporate land and privately owned camps,” said Keith Magnusson, manager of the DNR Forest Resource Division’s Newberry unit. “There are a few camp owners who may be inconvenienced for a few weeks.”

There will be signs directing motorists to use alternate routes. The work includes:

  • Replacing a temporary bridge with a box culvert on Penny Creek. A box culvert allows water to flow naturally and provides a better environment for fish and aquatic life than a traditional tube culvert.
  • Replacing a portable bridge on Savage Creek with a wooden bridge.
  • Replacing a large corrugated culvert on Linton Creek with a box culvert. This crossing is located on the Camp 7 Road which leads to the Charcoal Grade.
  • Widening the Otto Brandt bridge near M123 to 16 feet with a new wooden bridge to accommodate logging trucks and trail grooming equipment.

The work is expected to continue for several weeks once started, with each crossing being made passable before proceeding to the next.
