Algoma Steel Cancels Annual Family Day Due To Worker Fatality

Algoma Steel is facing a fine of up to $2 million in relation to a death of a contract worker , 21 year old Damien Bryant of Sudbury.

Algoma Steel has been charged by the Ministry of Labour following an incident June 15,2023. Bryant was working in the steel plant for GFL Environmental Inc.

Algoma Steel is being fined under Section 25 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Ministry says that Algoma Steel failed to provide supervision, information and instruction to the employee that would protect the safety of a worker.

Representatives for Algoma Steel have been summoned to appear in Provincial Court on June 17.

The Steel Plant could see a fine of up to $2 million if convicted for the offense .
