UPDATE – SIU Investigating Fatal Police Shooting in West End

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officers were called to the Circle K store located on Second Line West for a disturbance call.  
  • Officers encountered a 37-year-old man in the vicinity of the store and offered to transport him to another location.
  • When the officers searched the man, they located a handgun. An interaction ensued, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck.
  • He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officer discharged their firearm during a call for service in the 0-100 block of Second Line West.

On May 11, 2024, around 10:30 p.m. officers were flagged down by people who told officers a 37-year-old was harassing them. Officers began an interaction with the 37-year-old and were in the process of getting them to leave the area. The interaction escalated and an officer discharged their firearm.

The 37-year-old was shot and transported to hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.

Sault Ste. Marie Police notified the SIU. The SIU invoked its mandate.

  1. Who investigates the SIU ? They have proven to be suspicious in always finding the police justified in their killings and assaults!!!

  2. the way this is written, it sounds like everything happened at the Circle K.
    of that’s the case how did everyone get down to the Plaza at the corner of Second Line and People’s Road?
