Shots fired in attempted break-in, no injuries

NEGAUNEE, Mich. – The Negaunee Police Department responded to reports of gun shots fired within a residence just after 3 a.m. ET on Saturday morning.

Through investigation, police determined that a 35-year-old white male attempted a break-in through a window a residence. A 60-year-old white female, the homeowner, noticed the male in his attempts to unlawfully access her dwelling.

The male, upon being discovered, shot one round at the female, however did not hit her. The female homeowner then returned fire with one round directed at the intruder, also without making contact. Neither party was injured during the altercation.

The homeowner did then lock herself in the bedroom and called 911. Officers attended and a search revealed the male suspect attempting to hide in the basement of the residence. He was discovered, was detained and then arrested. A short time later, a 33-year-old white female who was related to the male suspect was arrested as well.

The Negaunee City Police Department was assisted on the scene by the Michigan State Police, Ishpeming City Police Department, and the Michigan State Police Crime Lab.
