Shoreline Cleanup Planned

The Sault Ste. Marie Water Rangers Task Team, hosted by NORDIK Institute in partnership with the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority, is hosting a series of events this week. Events kick off with an Algoma University Campus clean-up: July 11, 2024 from 10am-1pm. Meet at the NORDIK Institute office (at the University, room SH 211) to participate in an Algoma University campus-wide clean-up activity. At noon, join NORDIK Institute at Algoma University’s SpeakEasy for a presentation about volunteer opportunities in community-led water science.

Water monitoring helps us understand the condition of local waters, track changes over time, identify potential problems, and design appropriate solutions. On July 12 2024, all interested community members are invited to participate in water quality monitoring training from 1pm to 3pm at Algoma University (EW 205).  If you’re interested in volunteering with the Sault Ste. Marie Water Rangers Task Team, this is our next orientation (mandatory training); however, there will be many others if you cannot make it (please contact us to sign up for future training or volunteering at events).  This training opportunity is available every two weeks on Tuesdays at 6pm. A second portion of the training, which takes place outdoors, will be arranged based on availability. If you’re not sure if you want to volunteer, but want to learn more, join us for the training anyway and make your decision once you have a better idea of what we do!

On July 13, 2024, visit with NORDIK staff at the Drake Street Park from 10-11am to learn about community-based water quality monitoring and environmental DNA. Help us collect a DNA sample from Clark Creek so that we can learn more about the local mussels and insects. Then, head over to Bellevue Park (at the covered area near Topsail Island) to participate in a shoreline clean-up from 11am-1pm.  We will be picking up garbage from around the park and testing a new mobile application that uses AI to measure different kinds of litter!  Please be prepared for the weather and wear comfortable footwear.
