73, of Seney, died Tuesday morning January 30, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Born March 5, 1950 in Dewitt, son of the late Lyle and Janice (Hartz) Holcomb, Roy was a 1968 graduate of Laingsburg High School.
On July 29, 1976, Roy married the former Vickie Lee Matt in Ypsilanti and, in 1977, his employment as a construction technician allowed him the opportunity to move to the Upper Peninsula with his wife and he never looked back. Roy was employed with the Michigan Department of Transportation for 34 years until his retirement in 2002. Following his retirement from MDOT, Roy continued employment for Schoolcraft and Mackinac counties.
Roy formerly served as a board trustee/president of the Tahquamenon Area School district and board trustee of the EUP Intermediate School district.
Roy enjoyed traveling the local highways. He had friends anywhere he went and was well known at many local restaurants and businesses as he loved breakfast and the company of the local staff. A few of his favorites were the Jolly Inn, the Helmer House, and the Triangle Restaurant. A devout Detroit Lions fan, he enjoyed watching football on Sundays and cheering his team on. He enjoyed fishing, especially with his granddaughters and enjoyed hunting the U.P. There was truly nothing Roy enjoyed more than time with his girls. He seldom missed any event they were a part of including sports, and during games he was a fan of every kid on the court. He would travel to any game, with no regard to distance. Roy, along with his late wife Vickie adopted many animals from local shelters. He was a lifelong lover of animals and always had at least one traveling with him in his truck at all times.
In addition to his parents, Roy is preceded in death by his wife Vickie on January 28, 2021, brother-in-law Kristopher Gray, brother-in-law Richard Miller, brother-in-law Alan Matt and most recently his sister Ethel Newkirk on December 26, 2023.
Survivors include his loving sons Josh (Jennifer Rasberry) Holcomb of Catlin, Illinois, Jake (Nickie) Holcomb of Lakefield and Adam (Ashley) Holcomb of Germfask; granddaughters Ava, Jocelyn and Brooke; brothers Ronald (Sandy) Holcomb of Lansing, Michigan and Roger (Grace) Holcomb of Haslett, Michigan; several nieces and nephews; beloved dog “Biscuit”.
