Rotary Sports Awards Dinner Names Sportsperson of the Year

The Rotary Club of Sault Ste Marie is proud to present the winners of the 67th annual Sports Awards Dinner, an evening dedicated to honouring achievements of the city’s local student athletes. Hosted June 11th at the Machine Shop in the Canal District, Rotary presented awards to students in 15 different sports categories.

“It’s exciting to participate in the Sports Awards ceremony, especially when we add new sports such as volleyball.  In 2023, we added Nordic Skiing and who knows what the future will bring?” shared Murdoch Carter, Sports Awards Chair. “Fine candidates were nominated in each of the sports categories by the local high schools, and to pick the eventual winner was, I’m sure, an impossible task.  It is very clear to everyone, however, that just being nominated is an achievement, in itself, worth honouring.”

This annual tradition began in 1956 and continues to acknowledge the students’ sportsmanship, leadership, and athletic accomplishments.

It’s an honour to be part of the Rotary Awards Banquet. This is my ninth year helping to organize the event and this year will have the highest attendance there has been in my time on the committee. Broughton Award winners – its an honour to have two fine young gentlemen whom I know very well to represent our city as sportspersons of the year.”

The Annual Rotary Sports Awards Dinner serves as a celebration for our entire school community. This includes the athletes, parents, coaches, and faculty that made these successes possible.
